Indigo is one of the oldest dyes used to colour fabric and was the only dye used to dye denim jeans. To dye a dark midnight blue, it some times takes more than 60 dips in the dye vat to achieve.
In this introductory workshop, we will be sharing an overview of how the amazing indigo dye is prepared from plant to pigment, you will also get to bring home a few indigo seeds to try your hands and growing the indigo plant. You will dye a small piece of practice cotton fabric and finally a 2-meter handwoven khadi scarf in our resident 150L organic fermentation vat.
The resist dyeing technique often referred to as shibori has been used in many parts of the world dating as far back as 800CE. We are all familiar with widely popular tie-dye as we all once owned a tie-dyed t-shirt or bandana at some point (I know you do!). You might think they are the same but no, shibori is not tie dye. We will share simple resist dyeing methods, folding, clamping and tying with common objects to create patterns that are both visually exciting and professional.
Please come dressed in clothes that you don’t mind getting some dye on. Aprons and gloves will be provided if you need them. Our studio indigo shibori workshop is limited to 6 participants so each individual gets quality guidance from our instructor. Please note that workshop slot may be rescheduled should the minimum class size of 2 pax is not met. You will be notified of any changes at least 2 days before the workshop.
